![]() ![]() ![]() Gender benders are among my favorite plot lines, but they have been done better than in Hana-Kimi. It's not awful, and it's still entertaining, but it doesn't stand out at all. I reread it a couple of years ago and I was seriously disappointed, since I remembered enjoying it so much. I was so involved and I was shipping Mizuki with Sano so hard. Literally, I think it was like the third manga I ever read. The first time was in 2008 when I first discovered the wonder of manga. I've actually read this manga a couple of times. Read the full review at A Reader of Fictions. My third read through is a bit more balanced, seeing both the good and the bad. Thus, I later had to reread it, only to find it didn’t live up to my memories of it, now that I had a larger basis for comparison. ![]() It was one of the first I picked up and I was IN LOVE with it completely. Early on in my manga obsession, which began in the summer of 2008, I read Hana-Kimi. I’ve actually read Hana-Kimi twice before, so this was both nostalgic and somewhat eye-opening. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is the frankness of the telling however that makes it tolerable to read. They are bloody and gruesome, from bludgeoning seals, killing a polar bear mother in front of its cub, and capturing the cub harpooning the whales, rape, and one man's arm being ripped from his body. McGuire is relentless in his frank descriptions. Whatever Greenland whaling is like, he thinks, it will surely not be anything like that." He thinks of it as a sort of holiday "God knows that is what he needs after the madness of India: the filthy heat, the barbarity, the stench. After being dismissed from the army and with no prospects, he signs on to the whaling ship Volunteer. When it goes horribly wrong, with a large amount of deaths including a boy that had saved Sumner's life, he becomes addicted to opium. As a surgeon with the British Army in India he and some other medics attempt a theft. ![]() The flawed hero, Patrick Sumner, has shameful secrets. It is fast moving tale of murder, a merciless revelation of the whaling industry, greed and evil. In a complete 180 from last month's Ocean of Insight, The North Water, by Ian McGuire is a distressingly dark and brutal novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Barenuckle Bastards are in the ice smuggling business, among other things, and it was such an interesting world to peer inside. It made me want to plan another trip to London, just to go to Covent Garden. The world-building in this first book of the series is also outstanding. The next book in this series is Whit’s and I’m all here for it. Whit is a man of few words, but he knows exactly what to say to Devil. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoy the relationship between Devil aka Devon, and his brother Beast aka Whit. Of course, Devil decides to use Felicity to get back at this brother…silly man, that was never going to work out, but it was so lovely to watch him try. Moving back to Devil, the poor man is smitten the moment he sees her – it is just WONDERFUL! How I love watching the mighty fall. God, I love Sarah MacLean! The woman is a genius. But Felicity’s explanation of why she picks locks is truly an ode to feminism. ![]() I swear, there is literally a moment when Devil is beyond turned on by Felicity picking a lock….and it’s HOT. And of course one of the MANY locks that she picks is the lock guarding Devil’s heart. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The main one is that Martin worked for years on material cut from A Dance with Dragons – 12 chapters of varying length, or about 200 pages of manuscript, and another 200 or so pages of drafts, presenting it as material written for a new book. ![]() In June, YouTuber Preston Jacobs, who is leading a collaborative fan project to write his own version of The Winds of Winter, made a video called The Story of a Pessimist in which he closely tracked George Martin’s progress over the past 11 years and came to some depressing conclusions. “I think this one is going to be longer than that by the time I’m finished with it, and I think I’m about three-quarters of the way done, maybe? But that’s not 100 percent done, so I have to continue work on it.” It’s probably gonna be a larger book than any of the previous volumes in the series”, said George RR. “It’s a big, big book, I’ve said that before.
